DONALD E. AMMON

Age 92, died at 3:46 A.M., on May 7, 2016, at his residence, surrounded by his family. He was born on July 16, 1923, in Miles City, Montana, the son of the late Francis Marion (Bill) and Ethel "Mildred" Thomas Ammon.

On May 3, 1943, he married Joan Elaine Hackenberger at the First Presbyterian Church, Atlantic City, New Jersey. She preceded him in death on May 30, 1999.

He was a veteran of WWII, serving 36 months, of which 30 were completed as a cryptographer with the 24th AACS, 8th Air Force, in the ETO.

A 1941 graduate of Lima Central High School, he attended Shrivenham American University (Swindon, England), received a degree from Ohio Northern University (1949) and a Masters from The Ohio State University. He was an Assistant Professor of Economics at Wilmington College and later a lecturer for University of Dayton, The Ohio State University, Ohio Northern University, Ohio University, and Mary Manse College. For 29 years he taught social studies for the Lima City Schools where he was principal of the Adult Evening School for seven years. Upon retirement he was the director of the evening academic curriculum at the University of Northwestern Ohio for eight years. He completed his years as an elementary volunteer tutor for the Lima City Schools.

His experience also included employment at the Lima Locomotive Works, the New York Life Insurance Company, Westinghouse Electric and Wright Patterson Air Force Base. He had a lifelong interest in genealogy, gardening, jogging, bicycling, tennis, investing, and watching old western movies. He was an Elder and member of the Market Street Presbyterian Church where he served 15 years as an active Session member.

He was a life member of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association, the Ohio Education Association, the National Education Association, and was a past president of the Lima Education Association. He was a life member of Post #0096 of the American Legion, Fraternal Order of the Eagles #370, the Sons of the American Revolution, Descendants of Valley Forge, and Palatines to America.

Survivors include two sons, Ronald Lee (Susan) Ammon of Waterville, Ohio, and Brett Allen (Crystal) Ammon of Cridersville, Ohio, and a daughter, Marcia Elaine (Richard) Wade of Springfield, Ohio; nine grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; one brother, John "Jack" Allen (Laurie) Ammon of Lansing, Michigan; and his beloved dogs--Luci and Sammie.

He was preceded in death by two infants Craig Thomas and Lisa Lynn Ammon, and three brothers; Francis Marion "Bill" (June Eileen) Ammon, Jr., Robert Franklin (Mary Elizabeth) Ammon and Charles Thomas "Tom" (Adah) Ammon.

Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, May 12, 2016, at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home and one hour before the service on Friday, May 13, 2016, at the Market Street Presbyterian Church.

Funeral service will begin at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, May 13, 2016, at the Market Street Presbyterian Church. Rev. Dr. Mark Rich will officiate.

Entombment will be in Memorial Park Mausoleum, Lima, Ohio
