Garrett Ray Chafin
passed away at 2:30 PM July 28, 2017, at The Ohio State Wexner Medical Center, Columbus, Ohio.
He was born November 6, 1948 in Logan, West Virginia to Ray and Jo (Garrett) Chafin. His father preceded him in death on June 5, 2008. His mother survives in Lima.
On September 3, 1993, he married Marsha Loebbaka. Garrett was a 1967 graduate of Bath High School. He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1968-1971, serving in Japan. He previously worked for Duff Truck Lines and Craftsman Construction. He was then employed by the City of Lima for 21 years, retiring in 2014. Garrett was a lifetime member of the Vintage Motor Bike Club (VMBC), joining in 1983. He looked forward to attending the big VMBC meet held every July in Portland, Indiana, with his son Darren. He was a member of the Van Wert Area Cushman Club for many years. He was also a motorcycle enthusiast and belonged to the Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club of North America. He loved attending many other vintage motorbike club meets across the United States. Another one of Garrett's pastimes was teasing people. He dearly loved to good-naturedly tease family, friends, and neighbors.
Survivors include son Darren (Jenni) Chafin of Elida, daughter Alisha of South Dakota, five grandchildren, Reece, Eva, Isaiah, Chloe, and Legend; brother Alan (Amy) Chafin of Lima; sisters-in-law Janice (Mark Brown) Loebbaka of Hilliard, Lynn (Dennis) Bower of St. Paris, Ohio; brother-in-law Michael (Liz) Loebbaka of Saugerties, New York; and several nieces and nephews.
His family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 2, 2017 from 3-7PM at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home, Lima, Ohio.
Burial will be at Gethsemani Cemetery the following day at 11AM. Please meet at the funeral home at 10AM with procession to the cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Rose Catholic School.
