Joan Hebden

September 17, 1929 — February 8, 2016

Joan Hebden
After a long battle with Parkinson's, Joan Evelyn Watkins Hebden passed away on February 8, 2016 at Lima Convalescent Home.

Joan was born in Columbus, Ohio on September 17, 1929, the oldest child of the late Lewis R. and Helen M. Forrester Watkins.

Joan has two younger brothers James (Laura) Watkins and John "Jack" (the late Londa) Watkins.

Joan married Edward Hebden Jr. on June 9, 1951 after graduating from The Ohio State University. Ed preceded her in death in 2007 after 56 years of marriage and hundreds of Buckeye football games!

Joan earned her first degree in Interior Design, but her career took a change when she and Ed moved from Columbus to Lima. She began substitute teaching and returned to school at BGSU and the University of Toledo where she earned several education degrees while raising five children with Ed. Joan spent 25 years with the Lima City Schools teaching at the elementary, middle school and high school levels. She finished her career as Art and Public Relations Director under Dr. Earl McGovern. Joan was instrumental in the development of the Arts and Computer Magnet programs in the Lima City Schools.

Joan had a fulfilling career where she touched many lives, but her heart and soul were at home with her five children and grandchildren: a daughter, Valerie (Larry) Sellers and grandson, Adam (Chantal) Sellers, a son, Edward (Catherine Bakody) Hebden, a daughter, Brenda (John Siegler) Hebden, a daughter, Lorelei Hebden Murray and grandson, George (Lauren Karas) Murray and granddaughter Natalie (Dustin) Page, a daughter, Michele (Howard) Smith and granddaughters Mallory Naftzger and Laura (and her daughter Payton Black) Smith and grandsons Drew Naftzger and Brian Smith. Joan had the pleasure of meeting her great grandsons, August James Murray and Gunner Theodore Page in December.
