Barbara I. Garlock

Barbara I. Garlock, 95, passed away at 9:45 a.m. on Thursday, November 3, 2022, at Lima Convalescent Home.

Barbara was born on February 17, 1927 in Bluffton, Indiana, to Garth and Mildred (Hanley) Roof.  On July 10, 1948 she married Jay L. Garlock, and gained a husband as well as eleven brothers and sisters.  He passed away on February 4, 2000.

Barbara was also predeceased by her parents, as well as her siblings and their spouses, Bonnie and Gene Buxton of Anaheim, CA, Joan and Tom Stout of Bluffton, IN, and Dean and Ina Claire Roof of Fort Wayne, IN.

She is survived by her children: Steven (Janet) Garlock of Westerville, OH, Linda Garlock of Lima, OH, Garth (Julie) Garlock of Columbus, OH, Jeff (Debbie) Garlock of Belle Center, OH, Lisa Garlock of Lima, OH, and Sarah (Joe) Rayman of Elida, OH; in addition to eight grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren; as well as many extended family members and friends.

She studied nursing at the Lima Memorial School of Nursing prior to becoming a full-time wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.  She always took tremendous pride in the successes of her beloved spouse and family and was always there to support everyone in challenging times.  Unconditional love was a hallmark of her life (as well as those famous “hugs”).

She was a long-time volunteer at St. Rita’s Medical Center and spent many days working with terminally ill patients in the “Patient Pride” program as well as assisting visitors to the 770 Medical Building.

Barbara was an avid Ohio State fan, especially basketball, and was excited to be able to attend several games with her favorite son and his wife when they played the Hoosiers.  On her 80th birthday, her other favorite son surprised her with a hot air balloon ride over the Arizona desert, which she thoroughly enjoyed even though they had to tip the basket to get her in before takeoff.

The family will receive friends from 9 – 10 a.m. on Monday, November 7, 2022 at St. John Catholic Church, 777 S. Main St., Lima, Ohio.  A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10 a.m.  Father Paul Mathew will officiate.  Burial will follow at Gethsemani Cemetery, Lima.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the Barbara I. Garlock Memorial Fund at the Lima Convalescent Home Foundation, 1650 Allentown Road, Lima, OH  45805.

Special thanks to the staff of the Lochaven Apartments and Lima Convalescent Home, especially The Greens, for the exceptional care provided to our mother over the last eleven years.  We will be forever grateful.
