David Lee Rice, 86, passed away on Thanksgiving Day morning, November 27, 2025, at his home.
David was born on July 24, 1939, in Lima, Ohio, to the late Vernon Norman and Naomi Catherine (Flager) Rice. On June 25, 1961, he married his beloved Donna Jeanette (Antram) Rice, who survives in Elida.
David was a graduate of Stokes Local High School in Lakeview, OH and then received a certificate in Data Processing from Metropolitan Technical Institute in Dallas, TX. He worked for Airstream in Jackson Center, Krayloy Chemtrol in Dallas, Duff Truck Line and the YMCA in Lima.
David’s greatest enjoyment was his family; he was a supportive and compassionate husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. In high school David played five sports and lettered in all five, excelling in football. He received a football scholarship to Ohio Northern University. Later he played tennis and golf. He coached the Bruins Little League football team for many years, coaching Thom and several of his nephews. Deb and Joanna were cheerleaders. He was an avid Ohio State football fan and watched as long as his nerves could take it, checking in now and then for scores. One of David’s greatest loves was music, especially Blues and Rock & Roll. He enjoyed working out at the YMCA and talking with friends. David was a member of the Gomer Congregational Church, where he had served in several capacities.
He is survived by his children, Thomas Wayne (Frank Gatto Jr.) Rice of Jersey City, NJ, Deborah Lee (David Estep) Rice of Columbus, OH, and Joanna Christine (Scott) Wessell of Delphos, OH; grandchildren, Morgan Brittany Wessell, Quinten Scott (Jenna) Wessell; great-grandchildren: Aris Lamar Downton, Asaiah Lee Ward, Emmitt Scott Wessell, Ashlynn Rose Wessell; brother, Michael George (Mary Anne) Rice of Waynesfield, OH; sister, Mary Ann (Phillip) Valentine of Wapakoneta, OH; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, James Walter (Linda Widmark) Rice.
The Memorial Service will begin at 3:15 p.m. on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home, Lima, Ohio. Father David Ross will officiate. Visitation will be from 1:30 – 3 p.m. prior to service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to donor’s choice.
