Delphos HOWARD

June 19, 1915 — October 20, 2004

DELPHOS RUSSELL HOWARD, 89, died at 8:50 p.m. Oct. 20, 2004, at Lost Creek Care Center. He was born June 29, 1915, in Anna to Joseph and Daisy Beeler Howard, who preceded him in death. On Dec. 12, 1942, at South Side Methodist Church, he married Elsie M. Hadsell, who died Aug. 18, 1999. Mr. Howard had been an assembly supervisor in the small motors division at Westinghouse Electric Corp. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1275, American Legion Post 96, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 370 and Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 54. He was an Army veteran of World War II serving with the 106th Infantry Division from Dec. 31, 1942, to April 17, 1945. While serving in Europe, he was taken prisoner by the Germans at the Battle of the Bulge on Dec. 21, 1944, and held at Stalag IX-B near Bad Orb, Germany. He returned to his outfit after being freed from the prisoner of war camp on April 17, 1945. He enjoyed sports. Survivors include four siblings, Florence (Adrian) Maddegan of Wapakoneta, Warren L. Howard of Yuma, Ariz., Pauline (Reuben) Deerhake of Sun City West, Ariz., and Russell (Joan) Howard of Wapakoneta; two sisters-in-law, Betty (Ken) Ziegenbusch of Lima and Vera Hadsell of Lima, who was a caregiver; a brother-in-law, John (Mickey) Hadsell of Arizona City, Ariz.; two nieces, who were caregivers, Lori (Tom) McGuire of Bluffton and Jean (Rick) Long of Lima; and several other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Delphos "Lynn" Howard; and three siblings, Walter Howard, Lucille Hardin and Paul Howard. Services will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at Forest Park United Methodist Church. The Rev. Larry Hopkins will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Lost Creek Care Center Recreation Fund.
