Dwight E. Long

November 1, 1955 — June 10, 2025

Lima, Ohio

Dwight Elwood Long, 69, passed peacefully and surrounded by family on June 10, 2025. He was born on November 1, 1955, in Lima, Ohio.

A lover of the beautiful outdoors, he came fully alive the first time he ever saw the Colorado Rockies and spent many years living as close to the “Big Blue Skies” as he could. Affectionately known as HairBear or Doc, he loved to take family and friends snow skiing and water skiing; and was always ready to provide opportunities for outdoor adventures.

He spent much of his life traveling America as a truck driver, originally hauling cattle for many years in the family business, and then driving his own rigs. When not in the semi, Dwight could be found on the back of his Harley or in his boat or camping in his RV. All which he did with his son by his side.

He never gave up in the face of adversity. He had a strong will to fight and succeed through all of life’s challenges to see the better days that lay ahead. He never shied away and always rose to the occasion when someone close needed a helping hand.

He is survived by a son, Dylan (Lexi); his mother, Marlene Long; siblings: Rodney (Gail Lynn) Long, Gail Long, Rita (Mark) Bryan, Carlene (Ty) Odenweller, Brent (Kelley) Long; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Carl E Long; his grandparents, Walter and Naomi Long and Jacob and Ethel Shellabarger.

It could be said that he lived his own life, dreamed his own dreams and turned many of them into his own adventures. He got acquainted with Jesus along the way, fully surrendered to him as the illness took hold, and then passed peacefully into His arms.

A celebration of life will take place at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home on Saturday, June 14, 2025, from 2 – 6 p.m. Friends and relatives are welcome to pay their respects at that time.
