Edmund John Biedenharn, 91, passed away at 9:27 p.m. on May 15, 2025, 2025, at Mercy Health St. Rita’s.
Edmund was born in Fort Jennings, Ohio on August 5, 1933, to Edmund H. Biedenharn and Theonella (Kramer) Biedenharn, who are deceased. On October 19, 1957, he was united in marriage to Helen Tobin, who survives in Lima.
Edmund graduated from Ft. Jennings High School, and in 1952 his father taught him to be a telegrapher for the Nickel Plate Railroad. His first job was third trick at Delphos Yards. After two years with the railroad, he enlisted in the U.S. Army for two years, after which he returned to the Nickel Plate Railroad. He worked 18 different stations as a telegrapher. His father retired after 50 years of service, and Edmund J. retired under Norfolk Southern R.R. after 43 ½ years.
He loved spending summers up at Black Lake, Michigan with his family. He was an avid railroad collector of dining car china and memorabilia. He traveled with his wife to railroad shows, buying and selling railroad items. He was a member of the Lima Elks #54, Lima Eagles Aerie #370, Morse Telegraph Club, Nickel Plate and AC&Y Railroad Historical Societies, Texas Date Nail Association, and Railroadiana Collectors Association.
He is survived by his two sons, Mark (Melanie) Biedenharn of Elida and Gerald (Ann) Biedenharn of St. Paris, OH; and two daughters, Susan (Tim) Martin of Jacksonville, FL and Karen (Kevin) Nusbaum of Petersburg, MI. He has eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and one deceased grandson.
The family will receive friends from 2 – 8 p.m. on Friday, May 23, 2025, at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home, Lima, Ohio. The Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at St. Gerard Catholic Church. Father Mike Sergi will officiate. Burial will follow at Gethsemani Cemetery, Lima.
