November 24, 1918 — December 13, 2015

Gertrude "Trudy" Navarre (Schaefer),
died peacefully in her sleep in her home in Lima, on December 13, at the age of 97 years young.

Trudy is survived by her three daughters, Dawn N. (Jim) Wingate, Darla R. Monroe, and Diane Lauer all of Lima. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Adam Monroe, of Gerton, N.C., Dr. Andrew Lauer of Columbus, OH, Lena Lauer, Brooklyn, NY, Dr. Jamie (James) Sinton of Houston, TX and Scott (Jenna) Wingate of Cincinnati, OH and her nephews Fred Schaefer (Beve), Toledo, OH, Don Schaefer, Lomita, CA.

She is preceded in death by her parents George & Lydia Schaefer, her husband, Ernest Scott Navarre, two sons-in-law, Gregory Monroe and Harold Lauer, and her siblings Dorothy Finn and George Schaefer.

Trudy was born on November 24, 1918 in Toledo, OH to George and Lydia (Miller) Schaefer. She attended the University of Toledo where she studied Business, taking after her father who ran Miller & Schaefer Distributors in Toledo near Cherry and Erie Streets on the banks of the Maumee River.

In the spring of 1942 she married her high school sweetheart, Ernest Scott Navarre, an attorney accomplished in both civil and criminal law. The couple's lives took them from Toledo, to Ada, to finally becoming one of the original settlers on McClintock Lake in Lima, Ohio, where they would raise 3 loving daughters.

During World War II, Trudy worked at Westinghouse, a true "Rosie the Riveter", as well as working at Clyde Evan's Grocery Store for 30 years to support her family.

Trudy was a proud Swiss- German, often reciting German prayers at Sunday dinner and a lifetime member of the Toledo Swiss Society. Trudy was a talented drummer, known to selflessly offer her services at wedding receptions free of charge, a true artist of conversation and a muralist, painting the walls of the United Church of Christ on West Elm Street. Trudy was also a member of the choir at West Elm UCC, and passionate about spending time with her family, especially annual summer trips to northern Michigan. She had a proclivity for all things blue, was an active bowler- the Captain at the helm of "Trudy's Tribe" until she was 80, and painted watercolors of nature in her free time.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, December 16, 2015 at 7:00 P.M. at Shawnee United Methodist Church. Rev. Bryan Bucher will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Trudy's life.
