Mary L. Goodwin

Mary L. Goodwin, 72, passed away at 3 p.m. on Saturday, December 20, 2025, at her residence.

Mary was born on October 11, 1953, in Lima, Ohio, to Charles Albert and Kathryn Louise (Shaw) Downing who have preceded her in death. On August 3, 1981, she married Jerry Allen Goodwin, he was the love of her life. He helped her so much after her strokes. She always said, “I don’t know what I would do without all of his love and help.”

Mary worked in retail most of her life, working at JC Penney for 9 years. She then took care of her mother-in-law who had Alzheimer’s until she passed. She attended Lima Community Church. Mary also loved helping with ALPHA at the church. She loved traveling, going to Florida and gardening. She was also a ’72 graduate of Elida High School.

Along with her husband, she is survived by her children: Ted (Holly) Fuller, Steven Goodwin, Kimberly (Tim) Surfield, Stacey (Phil) Green and Nicole (Josh) Lawrence; grandchildren: Kaitlyn, Ashley, Vance, Caleb, Leah and Edison; 2 great-grandchildren, Luna and Vincent; a brother, Mike “Mick” Downing; and sisters, Diana (Tim) Miller and Sandy (Greg) Frazee.

She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant brother, Charles Downing; a brother, William Downing; and a sister and brother-in-law, Pat (Don) Kleman.

Mary really appreciated all of her family, her special friends and especially her sister Sandy who helped her through her illness and always had an open ear.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Sunday, December 28, 2025, at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home, Lima, Ohio. The funeral service will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, December 29, 2025 at the funeral home. Pastor Chip Bullock will officiate. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery, Elida.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Stroke Association or Lima Community Church.
