Donald "Don" David Mangin

January 30, 1944 — April 6, 2023

Lima, OH

Donald “Don” David Mangin, Sr., 79 seasoned years, passed peacefully from this world into the presence of his Savior, Jesus Christ at 2:13 p.m. on Thursday, April 6, 2023, while at Cleveland Clinic Main Campus, Cleveland, Ohio, with loving family at his side.

Don was born on January 30, 1944 in Lima, Ohio, to the late John P. and Merle (Pughsley) Mangin.  He was preceded in death by his only sibling, Sharon Ann and her husband, Denny Long in addition to a nephew, Landen McCormick.

On October 6, 1989 he married the love of his life, Marsha (Allen) Mangin, who survives in Lima.

While in his senior year at Central High School, he began his life-long career at the local telephone company, acquiring many titles.  A career he thoroughly enjoyed and embraced along with all the changes throughout 50+ years; retiring April 1, 2010 from Century Link.  Fascinated by technology, he spent a lot of time and patience studying for work changes, learning computer, and enjoying electronics.  As an inventor of sorts, he even created a useful piece of equipment for the telephone company early on in his career, that was used for many years.

Since childhood he earned the moniker “Duck”, which continued throughout the years with his telephone company coworkers.  Duck was a fitting moniker along with his funny and witty sense of humor because he delightfully imitated sounds and voices, especially Donald Duck.  With that, very few knew of his beautiful singing voice and whistling capability.  In his younger years Don enjoyed softball, bowling, fishing, camping, music, and motorcycling.  He was a plane, train, and automobile enthusiast; and even moonlighted as a mechanic for Ralph DeLong for a time while raising his family.

His lifelong affair with vehicles led to many new automobile purchases over the years; but one of his favorites was his 2011 grabber blue Ford Mustang 5.0, which he won numerous trophies and plaques for.  After a year long medical recovery he was able to get back into the racing driver seat.  In leaving his “car family” after a cruise-in, he shared his drag racing skills with his friend, Jerry Cress.  A trophy ticket “peeling out” was earned showing everyone his resilience and fortitude.

Later he enjoyed NASCAR for many years and began rooting on OSU football.  Though miles apart, he and the kids texted the highs and lows of the football games as they unfolded.

Don asked and accepted Christ’s salvation for his sins in his 60’s and was then baptized.  Afterwards he became a member of Spencerville Nazarene Church.   The Fruits of the Spirit as Galations 5:22-23 reads, could easily be witnessed in and through him.  Now he is in the peace and joy of perfect love in the presence of his Heavenly Father.

He is survived by his children: Don (Trina) Mangin, Jr., Todd (Bonnie) Mangin, Christine (Jamie) Schneer, and Amber Allen; grandchildren: Lindsay, Emily, Shelby, Cohen, Riley and Evan; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 3 – 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 15, 2023 at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home, Lima, Ohio.  The funeral service will begin at 2p.m. on Sunday, April 16, 2023 at Spencerville Nazarene Church with an additional visitation one hour prior to service.  Pastor Darryl Potts will officiate.  A family graveside service will be held on Tuesday, April 18, 2023 at Memorial Park Cemetery, Lima.

Flowers are beautiful, but Don would appreciate memorial contributions to be made to Spencerville Nazarene Church in his name if you would like.

Arrangements handled by Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home.  Condolences may be expressed at www.chamberlainhuckeriede.com.
