Joseph Modica, 86, passed away at 7:17 a.m. on May 26, 2022, at his home in Lima.

He was born May 30, 1937 in Lima, Ohio to James Modica and Neusa (Shortino) Modica who preceded him in death.  On June 23, 1956 he married Elizabeth R (Bowsher) Modica who survives.

Surviving are children: Lisa A. (Hector) Modica-Ruiz, Mary T. Modica, Joseph M. (Lisa) Modica, Carol J. Modica, Charles A. (Carrie) Modica, Christine M. (Dan) Tavenner;  grandchildren: Jamie Culp, Sara (Dan) Altman, Saundra (Andrew) Moore, Samantha Modica, Julia (Austin) Hardin, Mathew Modica, Winifred (Craig) Hitchman, Andrew Tavenner;  great-grandchildren: Hunter, Millie, Mack, and Levi Altman, Cameron and Carmen Jo Thomas, Lilian, Waylon, Madelyn, and HallieHardin, and Elizabeth Hitchman.

He was preceded in death by brother and sister-in law, Carmen (Maryann) Modica and sister and brother-in law, Giovanna “Evon” (Wallace) Mikesell.

He graduated from Lima St. Johns High School in 1954 where he was a standout basketball and baseball player.  He retired from Dominion Gas after 39 years of service.  He enjoyed fishing with Johnny Adams, Milan Gilica and buddies from Dominion Gas. He loved to play his guitar and tinker with his electronics to get away from the craziness of his six children.  He enjoyed the gatherings at Indian Lake hosted by Erinie and Barb Gronas.  From his early days he had fond memories of the 4 Ms.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 31, 2022 at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home and one hour prior to service on Wednesday, June 1, 2022 at St. Johns Catholic Church, Lima, Ohio.  The Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m.  Father David Ross will officiate.  Burial will follow at Gethsemani Cemetery, Lima, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lima Central Catholic School.
