Joy Ann Dennis, 83, of Lima, passed away on Thursday, September 28, 2023 at Mercy Health St. Rita’s. She was born on April 16, 1940 to the late Joseph and Sarah {Spencer} Smith.
Joy had a career in retail and began at The Leader, and then Lazarus, and then finally finishing her career at Elder Beerman, retiring after 36 years. She was a member of South Side Christian Church for over 40 years and was always willing to serve her church. After retirement, she enjoyed many years with her community of friends at the Carlton House. She was an avid reader and enjoyed doing circle the word books. Just like her name, she was a woman truly full of joy and yet, was quiet and humble. She always sent a heartfelt card to everyone she knew. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society.
She is survived by her daughter, Debbie (Dave) Buettner; son, Jeff (Tonya) Dennis; grandchildren: Rian Dennis, Camey Jackson, Cody Monfort, Kirstie Dennis, Wyatt Dennis, Elliott Dennis, and Marissa Dennis; 7 great-grandchildren; sisters, Lucy Wheeler and Gloria (Willis) Hostetler; brothers: Bob Smith, Ronald (Florence) Smith, and Alan (Becky) Dock; and sisters-in-law, Jenny (Brian) Bultemeier and Rosalie Dennis; as well as her very special nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Woodrow Mewhorter; second husband, John Dennis; brothers: Charles Smith, Donald Smith, and Richard Smith; brother-in-law, Ronald “Chick” (D.J.) Dennis; and sisters-in-law, Esther (Glenn) Howbert and Garnet (Daryl) Throckmorton.
Her family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home, Lima. A funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, at South Side Christian Church, Lima. Friends may also visit from 10-11 a.m. prior to the service at the church. Rev. Todd Cosart and Rev. Wanda Werking will officiate. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, Lima.
