Laverne H. “Bud” Smith, 89, of Lima, passed away on Tuesday, December 4, 2018 at his residence. He was born on December 8, 1928 in Lima to the late Marshall D. and Ollie {Wildermuth} Smith. On May 25, 1950 he married Vera Joan Kohli, who preceded him in death.

He is survived by his children: Joyce Welker of Lima, Dennis (Marilyn) Smith of Denver, CO, Patricia Fouche of Lima, David (Joyce) Smith of Stevensville, MI, and Howard (Helen) Smith of Metter, GA, sister Shirley Creps, 18 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Vera, daughter Susan Brandehoff, brothers Edward Dean Smith and John Smith, sister Mary Katherine “Cay” Blockberger, and one great-granddaughter.

Laverne was an Army veteran in the Korean War and was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 1275. He retired from Lima Ford Engine Plant and was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church. He was active in church youth groups, umpired baseball and softball leagues, participated in parades and loved camping, fishing, and traveling across the country visiting family and friends.

On Wednesday, December 12, 2018, there will be a gathering time for friends and family at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home in Lima, from 11am-1pm.
